The mountain of Palencia

The mountain of Palencia and the neighboring Picos de Europa are the highest elevations of the Cantabrian coast. This is a circular, five-day route, for advanced cyclists, ready to ride on very broken tracks, with hard ramps, that will also force us sometimes to push the bike to achieve an itinerary through a succession of mountains and unique valleys .

Daily distances are short but intense. We travel through glacial valleys, reservoir shores, high mountain trails, visit Romanesque temples, ruins of Cantabrian castros, monumental localities, within a select sample of the Natural Park Montaña Palentina.

This route runs through the Fuentes Carrionas and Fuente Cobre-Montaña Palentina Natural Park, site classified as SCI (Site of Community Importance) and SPA (Special Protection Area) in the Natura 2000 network.

Scheduled itinerary:

Day 1.- Transportation to Aguilar de Campoo. Ride to Barruelo de Santullán (22 km). Visits to the Roman bridge of Nestar and the visitors center of Barruelo de Santullán. Lodging.
Day 2.- Ride from Barruelo to Camasobres (34 km). Visits to the abbey of Lebanza and the Romanesque church of San Salvador de Cantamuda. Lodging at Posada de Fuentes Carrionas.
Day 3.- Ride from Camasobres to Vidrieros (54 km) by the Montaña Palentina Natural Park. Lodging.
Day 4.- Ride from Vidrieros to Guardo (35 km). Lodging.
Day 5.- Ride from Guardo to Cervera de Pisuerga (48 km). Visits to the Cantabrian hillfort of Santibáñez de la Peña and the historical center of Cervera de Pisuerga. Lodging.
Day 6.- Ride from Cervera to Aguilar de Campoo (31 km). Visits to the chapel of Saint Vicent of Cervera de Pisuerga, the visitors center of Barrio de Santa María, and the monumental center of Aguilar de Campoo. Farewell lunch. Transportation back home.
