Maqueda and its castle

Maqueda and its castle

In 1554 was printed the Lazarillo de Tormes, an anonymous story that reached a great popularity and that many consider the first picaresque novel.

This is a two-day, easy route, for moderate cyclists, that follows in the footsteps of the famous rascal by the province of Toledo. From Almorox to Toledo, we will ride through ancient roads that surely were covered by the text writer. We will know the fortress and the main squeare of Escalona, with the famous column where the blind man broke his head following the indications of the rogue. In addition to the castle of Maqueda, the spectacular collegiate church of Torrijos, and finally the old town of the impressive city of Toledo.

Escalona is part of the network of the magical towns of Spain.

Since 1986 the historic city of Toledo is a World Heritage Site.

And in 2016, Toledo was the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy.

This route runs through Groves of the Alberche river, a site classified as SCI (Site of Community Importance); and Steppe area on the right bank of the Guadarrama river, area protected as SPA (Special Protection Area) in the Natura 2000 network.
