Wakhan valley

A great bike tour, with supporting car, in a high mountain scenario, two weeks of demanding pedaling, for advanced cyclists. This is a circular route that starts in Khorog, on the banks of the Panj River, in the deep valleys of Western Pamir, to climb the mythical Pamir Highway up to the shores of Lake Yashil Kul, the Emerald Lake. From here we will climb the hard track of the Khargush Pass (4344 m), the roof of the route, and descend to the Pamir river valley, the natural border with Afghanistan, rolling the hardest km in an isolated environment of dramatic beauty. We will continue along the valley of the Wakhan River, at the foot of the Hindu-Kush mountain range, visiting fortresses, hot springs and other vestiges of the legendary silk route.

Built during the years of the Great Game (1813-1907), the Pamir Highway is one of the most spectacular roads in the world, as witnessed by dozens of cyclists who ride it on every year. Its current layout was built by Soviet military engineers in the 1930s and to date, boast of keeping it open throughout the year, which is all a challenge for the second highest international highway in the world.

Since 2013 the National Park of the Pamir mountains is a World Heritage Site.

This route runs through Bulunkul and Yashilkul lakes and mountains and Ishkashim, sites classified as IBA (Important Bird Area) according to BirdLife International.
