The Tower of the uninhabited Masegoso, of Berber origin.

The Tower of the uninhabited Masegoso, of Berber origin.

This is an easy route, for beginners, for a weekend ride with the family. The Route of the Towers and Fortresses of the Rituerto Valley, in Soria, immerses us in the border lands that Muslims and Christians disputed for more than seven centuries.

At the beginning of the 10th century, a 'no man's land', the Duero line, would act as a semi-unpopulated border, and would be the scene of frequent incursions by both sides. Then small defensive fortresses emerge integrated in the population centers: the towers; with surveillance, defensive and refuge functions, alerting the rest of the garrisons with which they had visual contact.

This route runs through the Quejigares and holm oaks of Sierra del Madero, spaces cataloged as SCI (Site of Community Importance) within the Natura 2000 network.

Scheduled itinerary:

Day 1.- Transport to Aldealpozo. Ride from Aldealpozo to Noviercas (30 km). Visits to the towers of Aldealpozo, La Pica, Jaray, Hinojosa del Campo and Noviercas. Lodging.
Day 2.- Ride from Noviercas to Aldealpozo (27 km), by the Quejigares and holm oaks of Sierra del Madero. Visits to the towers of Masegoso and Castellanos del Campo. Transport back home.

The church of Hinojosa del Campo reuses two towers: the oldest (Muslim) was converted into a bell tower. The main tower is later (Christian) and serves as the head of the Romanesque church.
