This is a 3-days, circular route, also extensible to a week, for cyclists with fight desires a good itinerary of long climbs and explosive ramps.
Within the emblematic region of the Bierzo, we start in his capital city, Ponferrada, and then head up to the goldmine Las Medulas. Following the Saint Jacques winter path, we will visit some of the oldest settlements of the area. A day of rest in Las Medulas will help us to explore all the canals, ditches and tunnels that the Romans developed to demolish the mountain and get the ore from it. On the next day we will ride through dirt roads on the top of the Aquilianos mountains until the Tebaida berciana, the pretty village of Peñalba of Santiago and the Valley of the Silence. One more day to get back to Ponferrada.
Since 2002 Las Médulas are Natural Monument, and since 1997 Las Médulas is a World Heritage Site.
Peñalba de Santiago is a member of the net the most beautiful towns of Spain.
This route runs through the Aquilianos mountains, site classified as SCI (Site of Community Importance) and area protected as SPA (Special Protection Area) in the Natura 2000 network.
Day 1.- Transportation to Ponferrada. Ride from Ponferrada to Las Médulas (37 km). Visit to the cliffs of Santa Olalla, the castrelín of San Juan de Paluezas, the castro of Borrenes and the old settlement of Orellán. Lodging at Complejo Rural Agoga.
Day 2.- Rest day. Visit to the Roman mines of Las Medulas. Lodging at Complejo Rural Agoga.
Day 3.- Ride from Las Médulas to Peñalba de Santiago (33 km), by the Aquilianos mountains. Visit tot he monastery of Saint Peter in Montes de Valdueza, and the church of Saint Jacques in Peñalba. Lodging.
Day 4.- Ride from Peñalba to Ponferrada (23 km). Farewell lunch. Transportation back home.
