This is a one-day linear route for beginner cyclists who want to explore the Henares canal.
These almost 40 km of hydraulic works, whose construction took almost a century to complete, currently irrigate about 6,500 hectares, mostly in Guadalajara and some in Madrid, and belong to the Community of Irrigators, currently made up of about 1,500 members. Its ease of access by train makes it a good plan for traveling with the family.
This route runs through the riberas del Henares, and the Cuencas de los ríos Jarama y Henares, sites classified as SCI (Site of Community Importance) and areas protected as SPA (Special Protection Area) in the Natura 2000 network.
Humanes - Meco (48 km): Humanes train station - weir (beginning of the canal) - Henares canal - Yunquera de Henares - Henares canal - Fontanar - Henares canal - Marchamalo - Henares canal - Cabanillas del Campo - Henares canal - final ponds - Henares canal - Meco - Meco train station
Interesting old document, with cool photos and maps: Conjunto de obras de regulación y aprovechamiento del río Henares y sus afluentes, by the Confederación Hidrográfica del Tajo.
