This is a weekend route, linear, for initiated cyclists, that runs almost 80 km of the greenway of the Vasco-Navarro train. This train track was the longest electrified narrow gauge railway of the peninsula, linking the core of the Guipuzkoan coalfields with the capital of the Valley of the Ega, Estella.
The route begins in the pretty town of Vitoria-Gasteiz, then crosses the plains of the Llanada Alavesa, and then gets into the mountains of Araba. Combining labor and cereal crops with oak woods, we reach Maeztu, where we spend a night. On next day we follow the course of the rivers Berrón and Ega, enjoying the landscape of meadows and the elegant railway stations built in the Old English style, up to Estella-Lizarra, from where we will return.
Estella-Lizarra is a member of the net Medieval Towns and Villages.
We remind you that Vitoria-Gasteiz was the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy 2014, and in 2012 Vitoria-Gasteiz was the European Green Capital.
This route runs through High mountains of Vitoria, Ega-Berrón River, and Ega-Urederra Rivers, sites classified as SCI (Site of Community Importance); and Izki mountains, areas protected as SPA (Special Protection Area) in the Natura 2000 network.
