This is a 9-days-in-a-row, circular route, with demanding stretches and recommended for already traveled cyclists who want to know in detail the Community of Madrid.
We start by visiting the Regional Park of the Middle Course of the Guadarrama River, and then we arrive at the Tagus and Tajuña meadows, touring the Alcarria region of Madrid, the Jarama basin and finally ascending through the northern highlands and the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park. Throughout the itinerary we will get to know the three sites of the Community of Madrid that are World Heritage Sites: San Lorenzo del Escorial, Aranjuez and Alcalá de Henares.
Since 1984 the monastery of El Escorial, since 2001 the cultural landscape of Aranjuez, and since 1998 the University and the Historic Precinct of Alcalá de Henares, are World Heritage Sites.
Since 1992 the Upper Manzanares river is a Biosphere Reserve.
This route runs through the Sierra de Guadarrama, the Lozoya river basin and Sierra Norte, the Guadalix river basin, the Manzanares river basin, and the Guadarrama river basin, sites classified as SCI (Site of Community Importance); and the Sierra de Guadarrama, the Upper Lozoya, the Jarama and Henares rivers cereal steppes, and the Jarama and Henares rivers basins, areas protected as SPA (Special Protection Area) in the Natura 2000 network.
Day 1.- Transportation to San Lorenzo del Escorial. Ride from San Lorenzo to Navalcarnero (62 km), through the Regional Park of the Middle Guadarrama River. Visits to the castle of Aulencia, and the Mayor square of Navalcarnero. Lodging.
Day 2.- Ride from Navalcarnero to Aranjuez (69 km), through the Regional Park of the Middle Guadarrama River. Visit to the Royal palace of Aranjuez. Lodging.
Day 3.- Ride from Aranjuez to Olmeda de las Fuentes (72 km), by the greenway of the Tajuña river. Visits to the lagoon of San Juan, and the palace of the Marquises of Legarda in Ambite. Lodging.
Day 4.- Ride from Olmeda to Alcalá de Henares (42 km). Visit to the Visitors Center of Nuevo Baztán. Lodging.
Day 5.- Ride from Alcalá to Torrelaguna (53 km). Visit to the historical center of Talamanca de Jarama. Lodging.
Day 6.- Ride from Torrelaguna to Somosierra (60 km). Visit to the Arab watchtower of El Berrueco. Lodging.
Day 7.- Ride from Somosierra to Rascafría (66 km), through the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park. Lodging.
Day 8.- Ride from Rascafría to Cercedilla (36 km), through the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park. Farewell dinner. Lodging.
Day 9.- Ride from Cercedilla to San Lorenzo del Escorial (38 km). Visit to the arboretum Luis Ceballos and the monastery of El Escorial. Transportation back home.
