In 1993 there were 7,600 km of disused railway lines in Spain. Of these, more than 2,600 km have already been recovered as Vías Verdes: itineraries set up for cyclists, walkers and people with reduced mobility. Its great advantage is the ease and comfort of its route, with smooth slopes and wide curves. In addition, greenways eliminate the perpetual risk of traffic accidents suffered by cyclists and walkers on the roads. In its environment there are more than 100 old stations recovered to harbor accommodation, restaurants, bicycle rental points, tourist information offices, small museums, visitor centers or even swimming pools. Greenways are promoting new tourist resources in rural areas, connecting natural spaces, cultural enclaves and towns, and promoting a new culture of leisure and outdoor sports.
